The Driver's Roadbook · Spain, Portugal and Andorra · on sale shortly

Almost none of these roads has a toll. What stops you is a gate with a date on it.

44 driving roads across the peninsula and Mallorca, one page each: what the road is like to drive, what stands between you and it this year, when you may drive it, up to four places worth stopping for, and a button that opens the whole route in Google Maps. 1,300 km of road, every line drawn from OpenStreetMap and checked to reach the towns its page names.

Why these roads

The gate is not a toll

Of the roads shortlisted for this book, the number with a toll on the road itself is zero. What closes an Iberian road is a national park that bans cars for five months, a landslide that shuts a pass from February to June, or a barrier below the summit that has stood since 1989. Each page's third cell says which.

Dates from the bodies that set them

Cap de Formentor is closed to private cars from 15 May to 18 October, 10:00 to 22:00, with fines of 100 to 200 euros: that is the DGT's page and the Consell de Mallorca's notice, not a villa-rental site. The Covadonga lakes plan is the Principado's. Where a page's source is a travel site, the page says so.

A line that reaches the town it names

Every one of the 44 tracks was measured against the endpoints printed under its map. Where the map and the road disagreed, the road won: the Velefique climb was drawn on the wrong road for three days before the extract said otherwise.

Try five roads first

The same two files cut to five roads. No email address asked for: the pack is not on sale, so there is nothing to sell you afterwards.

What this book does not do

It is a draft, and it says so on every page

The roads are chosen, the tracks drawn and the stops checked; the writing is being reviewed. Until the book is on sale this page carries no price and asks for nothing.

The book is in English

The road names print as the signs spell them, in Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan; the prose is English.

Twelve high points are not measured

They print Not measured rather than a guess: valley and coast roads have no pass and no summit to name one, and this book has no elevation model to invent one from.

The 44 roads

Names as the book prints them. No drive scores here: they are part of what the book is.

Questions

When can I buy it?

When the review is done. This page will carry a price and a button the same day, and the shelf will say so. No date has been earned yet.

Is it the same book as the Alps one?

The same two files and the same page, with a different third cell: where the Alps book prints a toll, this one prints what actually stands in the way, because here that is almost never a toll.

Which cities is it close to?

Measured in a straight line: Porto has 9 of the roads inside 150 km, Coimbra 7, Granada 5, Barcelona 4, Palma 3, Madrid 2, Lisbon 2. It is strong in the north and around Granada, and thin around Madrid.
